Johannes Brahms eventually composed a First Symphony that makes countless references to Beethoven. When people remarked about his 4th movement tune that resembles the Ode to Joy\, he said\, "Every jackass notices that!" Between 1965 and 1977 the first movement was used as the opening and closing theme for BBC TV series Going for a Song.
